What's new#
This beta collects everything added since 0.5.0 (the previous beta was never published), mostly in the Arctic Client. The version ranges say where each feature works.
Arctic Client: new#
- Lock Slots: Alt + click locks a slot (a padlock shows on it; clicks and the drop key are blocked there). Modern versions and 1.8.9 to 1.12.2.
- Inventory Search: Ctrl + F in a chest or your inventory finds items by name. Modern versions and 1.8.9 to 1.12.2.
- Shulker Peek: hold Shift over a shulker box for what is inside, Shift + Alt for every slot. The window takes the box's colour, and chests, barrels, hoppers and other containers that carry items work too. Minecraft 1.11 and newer.
- Command Palette (Ctrl + K): search mods, servers and friends, and jump into Quick Join game modes.
- Combat Feedback: a hit marker, hit and kill sounds and a low-health warning.
- Saturation Bar now works like AppleSkin: a golden overlay on the hunger icons your saturation covers (a whole icon for 2 points, half for 1).
- No Hurt Shake: the view stops tilting and shaking when you take damage. 1.14 to 1.21.11 and 1.8.9 to 1.12.2.
- Dynamic FPS: a lower frame rate limit while the game is in another window, idle or in a menu. 1.14 to 1.21.11 and 1.8.9 to 1.12.2.
- Particle Control, Held Item (where your hand and its item sit in first person) and Portal Screens (the inventory, chat and menus stay open in a Nether portal).
- New HUD widgets: CPU, PC CPU, PC RAM, allocation rate, GPU, VRAM, frame time and 1% low; Block, Fall and Pearl; a floating TNT timer. Every widget can hide while Tab (the player list) is held.
- Tab Ping shows the number where the game's ping bars are (1.16 to 1.21.11 and 1.8.9 to 1.12.2). An Arctic badge shows above heads of Arctic players (1.16 and newer).
- OptiFine capes without OptiFine: players who have an OptiFine cape and no Arctic one show theirs (Mods, OptiFine Capes).
- One Arctic button opens a hub: Configure HUD, Mods, Replays, Friends, Presets, Accounts and Menu Style, with a badge for unread chat and new features. The Mods menu has categories (Combat, Inventory, Movement, Tools, Players), HUD widget groups, NEW marks, presets and distinct icons.
- Server list in game: hover a row and its icon becomes a play arrow, and clicking the icon joins at once. Disconnect screens stay the game's own when you chose the game's server list.
- Debug Screen can hide groups of F3 lines (version, FPS, coordinates, light, entities, system, targeted block and more), has its own text size, and its colours work on 1.21.9 and newer.
- Emoji button in the chat, and pop-ups on the connecting and loading screens.
- Fonts: the smooth font is pixel-sharp by default (Menu Style, "Smooth edges" brings the soft edges back), with softer shadows under it. Fancy works with Patcher's font renderer on 1.8.9.
- Shoulder pets blink.
- Motion blur, redone: it smears along the picture's movement from the camera's turn (and a stretch when you move forward), with no ghost copies. Pick a mode (turning and moving, turning only, moving only) and a strength slider. Hand and item blur too.
- 1.7 Animations (1.8.9): the sword swings while you block, swing while eating, drinking and drawing a bow, the 1.7 bow stretch, smooth sneaking, and the 1.7 item position in first and third person.
- Chat: click a line in the history to copy it; Chat Mute (players and words, also gone from history and search); timestamp options (12-hour, AM/PM, seconds, brackets, bold, italic); keep the chat when you leave a server; stacking options (time frame, ignore blank lines and dividers, also on 1.8.9 to 1.12.2); a Hide chat toggle; Auto Text answers a chat line by itself (when it says X, send Y).
- Quickplay: join Bed Wars, SkyWars, Duels and other minigames with a click, and play the last one again.
- Particle Control per kind (smoke, flames, explosions, crits, portal, water, potion, redstone, lava, block breaking).
- Visual and view: Damage Tint (the screen flushes in a colour you pick when you are hit), Snaplook (hold a key to see yourself from the front), Hide Titles, Fog (push it away or remove it; Fabric 1.14 to 1.21.4 and 1.8.9 to 1.12.2), Glint Colorizer (held and menu items, 1.8.9 to 1.12.2), Mob Size (every creature but players bigger or smaller; 1.13 to 26.3 and 1.8.9 to 1.12.2), Chunk Borders (1.14 to 26.3 and 1.10.2 to 1.12.2), and a Sound Changer that quiets or silences single sounds by a piece of their name.
- Widgets: Cooldowns (pearl, chorus, wind charge, shield; 1.14 to 26.3), Horse Stats (speed and jump of the horse you ride or aim at; 1.16 to 26.3 and 1.8.9 to 1.10.2), a Looking at widget (the block or creature under your crosshair), and the Items widget counts the items you choose.
- Scrollable Tooltips (1.8.9 to 1.12.2): a tooltip taller than the screen moves with the mouse wheel.
- Any colour on every swatch row (a picker with hex entry), and a Rescan button for controllers on 1.8.9 to 1.12.2.
- Hitboxes and Chunk Borders switch on and off at once on 1.21.11 to 26.3 (they used to need a rejoin).
Launcher: new#
- Change an instance's mod loader: another build of the same loader, or Fabric, Quilt, NeoForge or Forge on the same Minecraft version. Its mods are looked up first, and the ones without a version there are turned off, not deleted.
- Duplicate instance: a copy with its own folder, the same mods, packs, settings and configs (worlds when you ask).
- Send logs to staff: a button in the Logs tab sends the log you are looking at (user name, folders, e-mail and IP addresses and tokens taken out) and gives you a short code to paste in your ticket.
- A global "Play with Arctic Client" switch in Settings, set in setup too.
- Setup can add a desktop shortcut (on by default) and asks, once and optionally, how you heard about Arctic. Only your answer is sent.
- Crash reports can carry a contact (a Discord name or e-mail) and read the game's latest.log and Java's crash file when the game dies quietly. Java's crash file is trimmed first: no command line, VM arguments or environment variables.
- Import HUD layouts from Fast Client and Silent Client.
- Settings in groups and a sidebar in sections. The instance page says when the client is off for everything. Play times over a day read as days. The mod download bar sits above the search field with a percentage.
- Mac: the app is signed and notarized by Apple, so it opens without a warning. Homebrew works:
brew install brksfrb/arctic/arctic-launcher. - OptiFine capes of your accounts in Cosmetics, Capes: one click wears one as an Arctic cape, so Arctic players see it with or without OptiFine.
- Pick the modpack version: every modpack in the browser has a Versions button listing its versions with their Minecraft version and loader.
- Names the system can't find: when Windows can't look up a website (error "No such host is known"), the launcher asks Cloudflare over HTTPS instead. It is not used behind a proxy; set
ARCTIC_NO_DOH=1to turn it off. - Link your Discord to your Arctic profile, which also restores an offline account on a new PC.
Fixed#
- The 1.8.9 to 1.12.2 mouse pointer comes back on open screens (a grabbed mouse or an empty cursor, seen in fullscreen).
- Glow-ink sign text no longer flickers with the smooth font (1.21.9 to 1.21.11).
- The Mods menu's category chips wrap instead of running past the panel.
- In the Logs tab the mouse wheel and dragging past the edge scroll while you select. Friends' screenshots and chat pictures are decoded with size limits, and chat pictures no longer show empty.
- The page's scroll bar sits on the window's edge.
- The game no longer fails to start with a damaged
arctic-mod.jar: it is checked before every start and written again when it is broken. - Arctic's HUD widgets no longer disappear while hitboxes are on (1.21.11 to 26.3).
- A controller stick that kept the player walking after it was let go is released.
